Adidas Factory Shops

Adidas is one of the world’s leading athletics brands, with a strong reputation for excellence that has been built up over more than sixty years in the business.

Based in Germany, Adidas is not only a household name on its own, but is also the parent company to other well-known brands such as Reebok, TaylorMade, and Rockport.

This has allowed the Adidas Group to provide products and services to many different areas of the sporting industry. Known for its marketing as much as its products, the Adidas brand features a distinctive logo made up of three stripes or bars.

What is not often known about this design is that it was originally bought from a Finnish company in the 1950s. More than sixty years on, Adidas’ name and logo continue to be recognised all over the world.

Early history of Adidas

Like many major brands, Adidas started small. On his return from fighting in World War I, German native Adolf “Adi” Dassler went to work in his mother’s laundry making sporting shoes, and was joined shortly thereafter by his brother, Rudolf.

Together they founded the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory in Herzogenaurach, Bavaria (where the headquarters of the company is still located today).

Despite many setbacks, including an unreliable power supply that forced them at times to rely on pedal power from a stationary bicycle, the Dassler brothers managed to achieve a remarkable degree of success with their shoes. This was due in no small part to their innovative designs, including the introduction of screw-on studs and greater attention to the ergonomics of high-performance footwear.

Dassler shoes became highly popular among footballers the world over, as well as other athletes such as US sprinter Jesse Owens, who used Dassler spikes to win four gold medals in the 1936 Olympic Games. The Dassler brothers eventually split, with Adolf going on to form Adidas (a combination of his two names) and Rudolf founding Ruda (later rebranded as Puma). Today, the main focus of the Adidas brand is on the production of sporting gear, and particularly footwear, for a variety of sports and athletic pursuits. In addition, the company produces a range of apparel and sporting accessories, such as bags, shirts, watches, eyewear, and other equipment.

The company has also been responsible for the production of footballs for the FIFA World Cup for several years. Adidas currently ranks as the largest sportswear manufacturer in Europe, and is second only to American brand Nike in terms of worldwide production and sales of sporting goods.

Adidas stores in South Africa

Within South Africa, Adidas is as popular as it is throughout most of the world, with a large number of dedicated retail outlets as well as being distributed in sporting stores throughout the country.

The brand saw a surge in popularity following the 2010 FIFA World Cup held in the country, not least due to the company being one of the major sponsors of the event. The headquarters of Adidas South Africa are located in Cape Town.
